Axel Leohard Sundquist Chief Carpenter's Mate, U.S. Navy Medal of Honor Recipient Spanish-American War Chief Carpenter's Mate Axel Leohard Sundquist (26 May 1867 - 22 December 1910) was a U.S. Navy sailor who received the U.S. military's highest award for valor, the Medal of Honor, for his heroic actions during the Spanish-American War. Axel Leohard Sundquist was born on 26 May 1867 in Furland (Finland), Russia, and immigrated to the United States. When he entered the U.S. Navy, he was sent to fight in the Spanish-American War aboard the USS Marblehead. Medal of Honor Rank and organization: Chief Carpenter's Mate, U.S. Navy Citation: On board the USS Marblehead at the approaches to Caimanera, Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, 26 and 27 July 1898. Displaying heroism, Sundquist took part in the perilous work of sweeping for and disabling 27 contact mines during this period. Death and Burial Chief Carpenter's Mate Axel Leohard Sundquist died on 22 December 1910. He is buried at Braman Cemetery in Newport, RI. |
