Henry Peter Russell
Landsman, U.S. Navy Medal of Honor Recipient Spanish-American War Landsman Henry Peter Russell (10 June 1878 - 1 December 1956) was a U.S. Navy sailor who received the U.S. military's highest award for valor, the Medal of Honor, for his heroic actions during the Spanish-American War. He later joined the U.S. Army and reached the rank of Captain. Henry Peter Russell was born on 10 June 1878 in Quebec, Canada. After entering the Navy, he was sent to fight in the Spanish-American War aboard the USS Marblehead. Medal of Honor Rank and organization: Landsman, U.S. Navy Citation: On board the USS Marblehead during the operation of cutting the cable leading from Cienfuegos, Cuba, 11 May 1898. Facing the heavy fire of the enemy, Russell displayed extraordinary bravery and coolness throughout this action. Death and Burial Captain Henry Peter Russell died on 1 December 1956. He is buried at Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington, VA, in Section 31, Lot 6377. |
