George Mahoney Fireman First Class, U.S. Navy Medal of Honor Recipient Spanish-American War Fireman First Class George Mahoney (15 January 1865 - unknown) was a U.S. Navy sailor who received the U.S. military's highest award for valor, the Medal of Honor, for his heroic actions during the Spanish-American War. George Mahoney was born on 15 January 1865 in Worcester, MA. After entering the Navy, he was sent to fight in the Spanish-American War aboard the USS Vixen. Medal of Honor Rank and organization: Fireman First Class, U.S. Navy Citation: On board the USS Vixen on the night of 28 May 1898. Following the explosion of the lower front manhole gasket of boiler A of that vessel, Mahoney displayed great coolness and self-possession in entering the fireroom. |
