William Hart Machinist First Class, U.S. Navy Medal of Honor Recipient Spanish-American War Machinist First Class William Hart (9 June 1866 - 6 February 1899) was a U.S. Navy sailor who received the U.S. military's highest award for valor, the Medal of Honor, for his heroic actions during the Spanish-American War. William Hart was born on 9 June 1866 in Massachusetts. After entering the Navy, he was sent to fight in the Spanish-American War aboard the torpedo boat USS Marblehead. Medal of Honor Rank and organization: Machinist First Class, U.S. Navy Citation: On board the USS Marblehead during the operation of cutting the cable leading from Cienfuegos, Cuba, 11 May 1898. Facing the heavy fire of the enemy, Hart set an example of extraordinary bravery and coolness throughout this action. Death and Burial Machinist First Class William Hart died on 6 February 1899. He is buried in Green-Wood Cemetery, Brooklyn, NY, in Section 4/5, Lot 21072. |
