Daniel J. Campbell Private, U.S. Marine Corps Medal of Honor Recipients Spanish-American War Private Daniel J. Campbell (26 December 1874 - 28 April 1955) was a U.S. Marine who received the U.S. military's highest award for valor, the Medal of Honor, for his heroic actions during the Spanish-American War. Daniel J. Campbell was born 26 December 1874 in Prince Edward Island, Canada, and after entering the U.S. Marine Corps in 1896, he was sent to fight in the Spanish-American War aboard the USS Marblehead. Medal of Honor Rank and organization: Private, U.S. Marine Corps Citation: On board the USS Marblehead during the cutting of the cable leading from Cienfuegos, Cuba, 11 May 1898. Facing the heavy fire of the enemy, Campbell set an example of extraordinary bravery and coolness throughout this action. Death and Burial Private Daniel J. Campbell died on 28 April 1955. He is buried at Mount Hope Cemetery in Mattapan, MA. |
