Dominick Delmonico Dominick Delmonico was born on 24 August 1915 in Hamilton County, OH, the son of Michele R. and August C. Bove Delmonaco. He was a graduate of Woodward High School in Cincinnati, OH. Dominick entered the U.S. Army on 14 July 1943 at Fort Benjamin Harrison, IN. On 27 August 1944, then-Corporal Dominick Delmonico was serving with Company L, 15th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Infantry Division, Seventh U.S. Army. On that day, CPL Delmonico's unit was in action against German forces near Allan, France. When his platoon got separated from L Company, he was credited with destroying 2 machine gun nests and, in the process, killing 5 Germans, wounding 4, and capturing 2 others. CPL Delmonico's’ courageous actions and extraordinary heroism that day earned him the U.S. Army's second highest award for valor, the Distinguished Service Cross. On 11 September 1945, Technical Sergeant Delmonico was part of a convoy of 3rd Infantry Division soldiers returning from a day of celebration at Besançon, France. The troops and townspeople were commemorating the 1st anniversary of the town's liberation from the Germans by the 3rd Division. TSGT Delmonico was killed when the truck in which he was riding broke an axle, slid off the road and then overturned on top of him. He was killed instantly. It was a non-battle death. Medals, Awards and Badges Distinguished Service Cross Distinguished Service Cross Citation (Synopsis) Corporal Dominick Delmonico, United States Army, was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with Company L, 15th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces on 27 August 1944. Corporal Delmonico's intrepid actions, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself, the 3d Infantry Division, and the United States Army.
