Gilder Stansbury Horne, Jr. was a graduate of the Virginia Military Institute, Class of 1941.

On 31 January 1943, First Lieutenant Gilder Stansbury Horne, Jr. was serving with the 1st Armored Regiment, 1st Armored Division.

On that day, 1LT Horne’s unit was in action against German forces at Faid Pass, Tunisia. 1LT Horne’s courageous actions and extraordinary heroism that day, at the cost of his life, earned him the U.S. Army's second highest award for valor, the Distinguished Service Cross.

First Lieutenant (Armor) Gilder Stansbury Horne, Jr. (ASN: 0-412761), United States Army, was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with the 1st Armored Regiment, 1st Armored Division, in action against enemy forces on 31 January 1943, at Faid Pass, Tunisia. First Lieutenant Horne's intrepid actions, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty at the cost of his life, exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself, the 1st Armored Division, and the United States Army.
