On 5 July 1944, Technical Sergeant Benjamin T. Tampio was serving with the 371st Bomber Squadron, 307th Bomber Group (Heavy) aboard B-24J Liberator Serial Number 44-4061. His plane was shot down that day by the Japanese 150 miles southeast of Yap Atol.
