Weeden Arthur Petree, Jr. On 5 January 1942, Second Lieutenant Weeden Arthur Petree, Jr. was serving with Company A, 194th Tank Battalion, U.S. Army. On that day, 2LT Petree’s unit was in action against Japanese forces on the Bataan Peninsula. 2LT Petree’s courageous actions and extraordinary heroism that day earned him the U.S. Army's second highest award for valor, the Distinguished Service Cross. On 10 January 1942, the morning began with a main Japanese attack within the II Corps' area of operation (AO) near Abucay and the 194th Tank Battalion moved forward to support the 57th Infantry (Philippine Scouts). During the battle on 11 January, 2LT Petree was shot by a Japanese sniper while climbing from his tank.
