He was serving aboard the USS Indianapolis (CA-35) when it was sunk by a Japanese Submarine on 30 Jul 1945, enroute to Guam. He is currently listed by the DPAA as unrecoverable and unaccounted for. He was aboard when the Indianapolis delivered the components for the "Little Boy" Atomic Bomb.
