Joseph Hoopes Joseph Hoopes of Philadelphia, PA, was a student at the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania. He was a member of Pi Delta Epsilon fraternity. In May 1917, Joseph entered the U.S. Army Officer's Training Camp at Fort Niagara, NY. He graduated in August 1917 and was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant a short time later. Hoopes was assigned to Battery E, Twelfth Field Artillery Regiment, 2nd Division and his unit was ordered to France. The unit arrived in France on 31 January 1918. The Aisne-Marne Offensive (Soissons) On 15 July 1918, the Twelfth Field Artillery Regiment began a march to Villers Cotteret Forest, with traffic congestion making the march difficult. The Regiment supported all attacks of the Fourth Brigade from July 18-20 and remained in line to support French attacks until 25 July. The Regiment entrained for the Nancy area on July 31. Between those dates, on 28 July 1918, 2LT Hoopes died. Medals and Awards World War I Victory Medal Burial Second Lieutenant Joseph Hoopes is buried at the Aisne-Marne American Cemetery and Memorial in Belleau, Departement de Meurthe-et-Moselle, Lorraine, France. He is buried in Plot B, Row 4, Grave 5. |
