Jerry Russell Howerton was born in 14 December 1947.

He was a graduate of Portsmouth West High School, Portsmouth, OH, where he was a member of the football team.

On 23 February 1969, Corporal Jerry Russell Howerton was serving with D Company, 1st Battalion, 1st Marines, 1st Marine Division, in Quang Nam Province, South Vietnam.

On that day, CPL Howerton was killed in action when he sustained wounds from small arms fire. His body was recovered.
