Corporal Cowan was a member of the 1169th Engineer Combat Group, U.S. Army. He died of other causes on 28 April 28 1951 near Youngdung-po, South Korea.

Cowan was awarded the Korean Service Medal, the United Nations Service Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Korean Presidential Unit Citation and the Republic of Korea War Service Medal.
