Corporal Whitten was a member of the 176th Armored Field Artillery Battalion, 40th Infantry Division. He died of other causes on 17 October 1952 near Kumsong, North Korea.

Whitten was awarded the Korean Service Medal, the United Nations Service Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Korean Presidential Unit Citation and the Republic of Korea War Service Medal.
