During the Korean War, Airman Third Class Petell was assigned to Sampson Air Force Base, New York. On 7 September 1951, he was killed when he was in an automobile accident near Auburn, New York.

Petell was awarded the Korean Service Medal, the United Nations Service Medal, the National Defense Service Medal and the Korean War Service Medal.
