On 22 June 1966, Private James E. Fuller was serving with C Company, 2nd Battalion, 327th Infantry, 101st Airborne Division, in Phu Yen Province, South Vietnam.

On that day, Private Fuller was killed in action when he sustained wounds from small arms fire. His body was recovered.
