On 26 September 1971, Staff Sergeant Kenneth Warren Ellis was serving with A Company, 326th Engineer Battalion, 101st Airborne Division, in Thua Thien Province, South Vietnam.

On that day, SSG Ellis was killed in action when he sustained wounds from an explosive device. His body was recovered.
