Stephen John Eckle was born on 18 February 1943.

On 12 April 1968, Warrant Officer Stephen John Eckle was serving with 187th Assault Helicopter Company, 269th Aviation Battalion, 12th Aviation Group, 1st Aviation Brigade, in Binh Duong Province, South Vietnam.

On that day, Warrant Officer Eckle was killed in action when the helicopter he was flying, crashed. His body was recovered. Eckle received a posthumous promotion to Chief Warrant Officer (W-2).
