On 2 October 1970, Private First Class Michael Dean Banta was serving with H Company, 75th Infantry (Rangers), 1st Cavalry Division, in Phuoc Long Province, South Vietnam.

On that date, PFC Banta was killed in action when he sustained wounds from small arms fire. His body was recovered.
