Fred Zimmerman was a farmer before he joined the U.S. Navy in 1940.

On 7 December 1941, Coxswain Petty Officer Third Class Fred Zimmerman was aboard the USS Arizona when the Japanese made their sneak attack on Pearl Harbor. He went down with his ship and is forever entombed in the Arizona.
