Killed In Action aboard the USS Grunion (SS-216) near the Aleutian Islands on or about 30 July 1942 when it was sunk by the Japanese armed freighter Kano Maru. The Grunion crew was listed as Missing In Action until 2 August 1943, when their status was changed to Killed In Action.

In 2006, an expedition led by John Abele (son of the commanding officer, Lt. Cdr. Mannert Abele) located the wreck of an American submarine off of Kiska, Alaska. The wreck was confirmed as that of the Grunion in 2008.
